Custom Hardwood Stain & Finish Options
Color and finish should reveal the wood and support the way a room is used. Grain House Hardwood helps customers compare natural color, custom stain, sheen, and protective coating choices as part of a considered hardwood refinishing plan.

Start with the actual wood
Species, grain, age, repairs, and previous treatments affect how a floor accepts color. A small retail swatch or a photograph of another home cannot predict the result on your floor. On-site samples make the discussion more useful.
Natural color or a custom stain?
Natural wood
A natural finish emphasizes existing grain and variation. Discuss the appearance of the sealer and coating system, because the finished floor may look different from freshly sanded bare wood.
Stain to suit
Custom stain choices can change the room's character. Preparation and sampling matter, particularly where older boards and repairs meet. Discuss preparation and the selected staining process on the actual wood before committing to a color.
Sheen changes how light reads
Satin and semi-gloss reflect light differently. Compare the desired appearance with room lighting, grain, traffic, and maintenance expectations. A sheen choice does not hide every surface irregularity or eliminate the need for good preparation.
Tailored Finishing Programs
Grain House Hardwood uses 100% Basic Coatings American-made floor finishes. We do not use one generic finish system for every floor. We select and tailor the finishing program to the individual hardwood floor, the customer’s priorities, and the specific demands of the space.
Our recommendation considers floor type, species, construction, condition, and existing treatments; residential or commercial use; traffic level and pets where applicable; desired color, appearance, and sheen; durability requirements; maintenance expectations; and access and return-to-use needs.
A gymnasium or sport hardwood floor has different demands from a residential hardwood floor or a commercial space. For historical restoration, preserving original wood and understanding previous treatments remain part of the finishing discussion.
Understand the system being recommended
As part of our premium, education-focused approach, we explain why a particular finishing program suits your floor. The discussion covers preparation and compatibility, the proposed sealer and finish, coat scope, sheen, drying and cure requirements, and future maintenance. Timing and care instructions follow the selected product’s current technical literature and the conditions of the project.
Finishes and Maintenance Systems
For gymnasiums and sport floors, Grain House Hardwood selects a system around court use, existing coatings, game lines, and the facility’s schedule. GymShoe is a clear, non-yellowing, two-component waterbased sport finish. StreetShoe NXT is a two-component waterbased finish for sport, commercial, and high-wear residential floors. GameDay is a clear, one-component waterbased sport sealer that prepares bare wood for Basic Coatings sport finishes; it is a sealer, not the protective finish coat.
For residential and historical work, we consider the appearance of the actual wood and the condition of previous treatments. Emulsion PRO+ is a one-component, ambering oil-and-water sealer and finish for residential, commercial, and sport wood floors. Its warmer appearance differs from clear, non-yellowing systems. On older floors, product selection follows our assessment of original boards and compatibility.
Read the manufacturer’s sell sheets: GymShoe, StreetShoe NXT, Emulsion PRO+, and GameDay Sealer. We explain the proposed system, preparation, drying and cure requirements, and ongoing care in your finishing program.
Care starts with the coating already on your floor. Our maintenance and professional recoat evaluation covers Acrylic Test Kit testing, Dissolver when acrylic polish removal is needed, and the distinct cleaning roles of IFT and Squeaky.
Make repairs part of the color discussion
Replacement boards can differ from aged wood. Review repair and lace-in options before finalizing color. For older floors, see historical restoration; for the preparation behind the finish, see our sanding and refinishing process.
